WTF Gallery # Artist talk: Sus Zwick and Muda Mathis

WTF Gallery invites you to a talk and video presentation, and a performance (details to be confirmed), by the Swiss artist duo Sus Zwick and Muda Mathis.

Speaking about what it means to work collaboratively on video, performance and sound works, they take strength from the fact that they have developed together as friends and as artists over a long period of time.
Also working regularly with a women’s band Les Reines Prochaines, they talk of the empowerment that being part of a group enables. As Sus Zwick puts it, “From all this work and our cooperative projects, relationships and friendships are forged and endure long after the work is finished.”

Taking about video, they add, “The medium of video (and audio) was the ideal medium for the feminist artists of the 1980s. Video was then not artistically determined, and still isn’t. This makes space. Video is a “practical” thing; it is compact, bright and small and includes so much: image, movement, temporality, rhythm, abstraction, figure, narration, color, language, music, document and fiction. Video, like music, implies teamwork; this helps against artistic loneliness. This is beautiful.”

Born in Zurich, Muda Mathis teaches performance and media at the Institute of Art, Academy of Art and Design, HGK Basel. Since 1982 she has produced performances, videos, installations and music, exhibitions, festivals, concerts, art in public spaces, collective works, and audio editions. Muda Mathis studied at F+F School of Experimental Art, Zurich; Sigurd Leeder School of Dance, Herisau; Video Art, Academy of Art and Design, HGK Basel
Sus Zwick was born in Fribourg, Switzerland. Since 1979 she has produced videos, documentaries, performances, installations and music, festivals, exhibitions, concerts, art in public space, collective works and audio editions. Sus Zwick’s studies included Education, Speech Therapy and Remedial Teaching at University of Fribourg, and Video Art at Academy of Art and Design, HGK Basel.

They are both part of the artists’ cooperative VIA VideoAudioFotoKunst, Basel, and a member of Les Reines Prochaines, a women’s performance band.
