In the land before we invented the word “nation state,” a territory was created and divided by race or ethnicity which shares some mutual tradition, belief, including way of life. After the modern invention of “nation state” concept, the diversity of different ethic groups has been neglected or excluded by centralised development, and it has become a chronic problem from the past to present. Some ethnic minority groups are not considered being part of the nation, for example, Rohingya and Karen in Myanmar.
Atiwat Silpamethanont is a documentary photographer who went to record the life of Karen, the ethic group, in refugee camp and conflict areas in Myanmar. Atiwat spent 2 years recording at the site; he has seen a survival tactics under the concept of nation state, and questioning the problem of reality in documentary photography which is far beyond the compare with the reality of what people are encountering everyday. The message and interpretation have to be viewed through people who are behind that images.
