The PHOTOFAIRS brand was created in 2014 in response to the growing interest in and demand for photography worldwide. Showcasing boutique events that celebrate the photographic medium in the broadest sense – from traditional still photography through to large-scale installations, video works and the cutting-edge of technology.

PHOTOFAIRS is dedicated to presenting fine art photography and moving image from leading international galleries and their artists in dynamic and cutting-edge destinations around the world.

In its highly curated approach, PHOTOFAIRS provides an elegant and vibrant environment for both seasoned and new collectors. In addition, tailored VIP and public programs are designed to create an engaging platform for our international audience.

PHOTOFAIRS will return to Shanghai its sixth edition, September 20-22, 2019 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center and has previously held two editions in San Francisco.

PHOTOFAIRS is a joint venture between Angus Montgomery Arts and the World Photography Organisation and is part of a wider network of leading contemporary art fairs including Taipei Dangdai, Sydney Contemporary, India Art Fair, Art Central Hong Kong, and Art SG.

Join us for the sixth edition of PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai returning September 20 – 22, 2019 (Collectors’ Preview, September 19, 2019) at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai 2019 will bring together around 50 of the most significant and forward-thinking contemporary galleries engaging with the photographic medium from across China and around the world, alongside a curated program of conversations, site-specific artists’ projects and film.
PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai will return to the historic Shanghai Exhibition Center from September 20-22, 2019 with an exclusive Collectors’ Preview on Thursday, September 19, 2019, featuring a special program of performances.

Since its launch six years ago, PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai has established itself as Asia’s leading contemporary art fair dedicated to photography and photo-based artworks. With its dynamic line-up of galleries from across Asia, Europe and North America, PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai has become a crossroads for international collectors, museum curators, and new buyers, in search of exciting work not yet seen in Paris, New York, and London.

The Fair plays an important role in shaping the tastes of the new generation of photography collectors who are increasingly evident in China, making it an unrivaled opportunity for galleries looking to broaden their collectors-base and to re-establish contact with clients from across Asia.

The Opportunity

Applications to PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai are open to commercial galleries or artist agents with a consistent exhibition history who present a minimum of 4 exhibitions per year in their own business premises, external project spaces or art fairs. Selection is based on the curatorial strength and premise of each gallery’s exhibition program, represented artists and the proposal for PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai. Criteria such as quality of the art, previous art fair presentations and any projects undertaken by the gallery and its artists both locally and internationally will be taken into consideration.

PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai accepts applications from galleries to the following two exhibiting sectors:

Main is the main exhibition sector of PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai, where leading galleries from across Asia and around the world present displays of vintage masterpieces, contemporary photo-based works, video and the latest innovations in new technologies.

The platform offers a lower stand rate to galleries that are new to the market. PHOTOFAIRS recognizes the difficulties of taking those first steps with art fairs and this sector looks to provide support for galleries that are: a) New to the mainland Chinese market b) Founded in 2014 onwards.
