Multi-active, multi-passionate and multi-talented Thai artist, Jakkrit Chewapanya is well known throughout Thailand and Asia by his nickname, Popkapi.

The sculptor, graphic designer and painter belongs to a new generation of Thai artists making waves with a signature chaotic and colorful style of illustration-inspired motifs and characters.

Artist Name: Jakkrit Chewapanya “Pop or Pokapi”

Favorite Color: blue

1. How would you describe your subject matter?

I just went back to painting recently (from sculpture-making). I get tired of making a concept all the time so I just paint what I like, which mostly are animals or random doodles.

I prefer to make pieces that are simple, creating new characters inspired from my signature look, mixed with personal preference.

I like my work to tell a story on its own. I feel like deciding on a particular concept or subject matter limits my creativity and is just not as fun to work with.

2. What do you like most about your work?

What I like the most is the enjoyment I get from making art. The sudden desire to create and paint.

I also think my work reflects my personality really well. It’s easy to identify which pieces are mine because of the way I use colors and lines.

3. What does your personal art studio/space mean to you and how much does it influence your process?

My house is my studio. I made a big bedroom as my painting room. But now the painting area is starting to expand more and more from the front yard to the back… But I also have my working room there and my computer room on the same floor for watching videos on youtube, seeing others work, listening to the music or just relaxing before getting back to painting.

At first I thought it would be a problem because of the size and also some of my clients who came to visit and said this space is too small. But for me, the size of the space doesn’t really matter. Any space can be used to create art, the real inspiration lies within yourself.

4. Has there been a change or movement in your life/work that has led to the works you are producing now?

My turning point happened 4 years ago. It was due to conflicts between my work and colleagues. One day I decided to bring my sketchbook with me to the office and started to draw like crazy, expressing all my feelings and thoughts. Finally, I gathered all the sketches and pasted them on a blank wall behind my desk. My boss was a bit shocked when he saw them but didn’t say anything.

My friends suggested that I have an exhibition, so I took them down, framed them and did an exhibition. I’ve been painting and sketching ever since. My life changed for the better once I could escape from the monotony of office life.

I think that was the starting point for me and my signature style. It felt just right and I’ve never looked back. Since then, my scribbles have just become bigger and bigger.

5. What are you currently reading, listening to or looking at to motivate/fuel your work?

My surroundings inspire me. I tend to make my work from my at-the-moment impressions. Sometimes, I just get a feeling and reach straight away for the paint and start working. I also always keep a pen or pencil for sketching and doodling at my office.

6. Favorite or most inspirational place in Bangkok?

My house. I just finished building a new one and I love every corner of it so much that I just want to spend all my time decorating it with my paintings. I can honestly think about my work all the time and never feel tired. For me, it’s refreshing and I’m just really happy to be at home, working and spending time there.

7. Do you have a personal motto?

Not really, I just keep on doing whatever is fun so I can enjoy life and never give up.

8. Is there something you are currently working on, or are excited about starting that you can tell us a bit about?

Currently, I have a sculpture project to finish. At first I intended to exhibit them in my current exhibition but it took too much time and it happened so suddenly, so I didn’t complete them, even though I started 3 of them already.

I feel like I want to continue working on the project, make the sculptures more solid and bigger since they were originally quite small. It would also be fun to see my paintings become sculptures, and transform from 2-dimension into 3-dimensional work. The sculpture pieces were inspired by my own face, and sometime animals. I mix everything together.

But it will take me a while before I’m ready to fully exhibit the collection. I’m also waiting for some kind sponsors.

9. Are you involved in any upcoming exhibitions or events? Where/when?

In regards to future exhibitions, I’m in contact with the owner of a gallery in Phnom Penh where I had exhibited my work the year before. They asked me to continue developing my collection but they haven’t really scheduled any dates yet. So eventually, I’d like to bring some of my sculptures to exhibit there as well.
