Pocket Productions - Pinhole Workshops Bangkok

BUILD YOUR OWN CAMERA AND EXPLORE THE MAGIC BEHIND PHOTOGRAPHY.

This workshop is a chance for any curious souls to embrace the mystery and magic of pinhole photography. Using a pinhole camera, you will allow your intuition to engage with your imagination to produce exciting imagery through the use of this simple yet unique photographic process.

Hanoi-based photographer Nikolaj Svennevig will lead the workshop with Nick McGrath (Bangkok Photography Workshop) in the beautiful hidden soi’s of Chinatown.

You will see how rewarding it is to make your own camera using everyday objects, and through this process get a deeper understanding of how a camera works.

Over this weekend you have the option to experiment with two styles of pinholes.

DAY 1 9am-5pm
Saturday, June 10th – From MATCHBOX to MAGIC BOX

In this workshop, we will be using a matchbox as the base. Bringing your creative skills up front and with some guidance, you will build a camera and through this process get an insight in the basics of photography and cameras. Once finished, we will have a short discussion about how to actually use your new camera: both technically and what photographic approach you can use. Finally, you will have the opportunity to go out and explore the hidden soi’s in Chinatown with your new magic box. This is the time to tap into your intuition and imagination.

Cost 1200 baht per person – Max. of 12 participants.

A little history.
The pinhole camera, or camera obscura as it is also known as is proof that fundamental principles do not change. Around 400 years B.C. the Chinese philosopher Mo Di was the first to discover the principles of the optics which forms the base of pinhole photography. Throughout the last 2000 years, philosophers and scientists around the world have independently discovered the image-forming possibilities of the pinhole. In the 16th century, Leonardo Da Vinci described how rays of sunlight beaming through dark caves, would project an image of the outside world onto the cave walls, thus creating a camera obscura Nature’s style. This is in very basic terms how the pinhole camera works: a tiny hole in a dark box casts a projection of an outside image onto a light sensitive surface (i.e. a film roll).
