Oil Street Art - Once lost but now found

Two art projects “Once lost but now found” and “Contagious Reading” is being held at Oi! from 22nd March 2019. The former exhibition sees artists respond to the environment and the location of the venue, thus creating artworks with the elements of a city by the sea, while the latter project holds workshops by drawing inspiration from stories about libraries with the aim of sharing insights into the power of reading and art.

Oi! is a Grade II historic building that was built in 1908 as the clubhouse of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. It is also the only building remaining from the original North Point coastline. The coastal area has witnessed the changes of the times, including the development of Oi! in the community. For the “Once lost but now found” exhibition, artists Leung Chi-Wo, Zheng Bo and art group MAP Office (Laurent Gutierrez and Valérie Portefaix) were invited to create three sets of site-specific artworks by responding to the environment. Their artworks are “Scratching On The Surface”, “YOU ARE THE 0.01%” and “Ghost Island” respectively.

“Contagious Reading” is part of the international collaborative project “Contagious Cities”, developed by the Wellcome Trust, which explores local epidemic preparedness and how it shapes a city’s physical, social and cultural landscape. Writer Lawrence Pun writes stories to stimulate the imagination about libraries, while artist Pak Sheung-Chuen transforms the written concepts into activities and invites the public to participate. The outcome will be displayed through different forms and practices. Visitors may experience how the “reading antibody” can help in the fight against contagious diseases and to spread it through human transmission, as something infectious in itself.

The “Once lost but now found” exhibition runs until July 28, 2019, while the “Contagious Reading” project will showcase its outcome in three stages. The first stage of the project runs from 22nd March to 18th April 18th while the second and third stages will run from 26th April to 23rd May and from 31st May to 23rd June respectively.

About the gallery

Igniting Art, Fuelling Creativity
At 12 Oil Street, we believe passionately in the transformative power of art.

We ignite art by providing a space that fuels creativity, imagination, and open dialogue and by inviting diverse communities to experiment freely with contemporary art and culture.

Through the empowering experience of co-creation, people can catch the spark of creativity, transforming their everyday lives and the lives of those around them through art.

Oi! is a new platform for exchanging ideas that aim to nurture young artists, promote community art and develop as an innovative and engaging venue for encouraging collaboration and co-creation in art. With the hope that boundless imagination and new experimental ideas can be triggered and that creativity can be sparked through different types of collaboration, we set out to connect art with people and the community.

Oi! is a Grade II historic building that was built in 1908 as the clubhouse of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Its name links the ideas behind it with its location: Oi! sounds similar to the address in Cantonese and conveys a call for people’s attention while providing a platform where they can realize their dreams in art.

Oi! will work closely together with the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, its sister organization under the Art Promotion Office. Representing the vertical axis, the VAC will continue to provide art training programmes for the public to further their artistic development, while Oi! as the horizontal axis will explore the possibilities of experimenting in art by providing space for projects that can inspire creativity and organizing programmes that engage the public.
