SUMMARY:H Gallery # Up Against Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Come to the next ‘D Dialogues’ event on Sunday 7th June from 2-4pm at H Gallery\nSathorn Soi\, 12 Bangkok \nD-Dialogues is a unique series of events. Basically\, we invite speakers from a range of very disparate backgrounds and perspectives to talk about their understanding of an important concept; an issue of global consequence. The upcoming event is titled ‘Up Against Interpretation’. D-Dialogues events are open to the public and are thought provoking for Art and Theory of Knowledge students\, teachers and enthusiasts. \nOrganised in relation to Nevdon Jamogchian’s installation\, titled KONDMANI\, at H Project Space\, ‘Up Against Interpretation’ is an informal panel-led discussion on the challenges\, problems and pleasures of interpreting contemporary visual art. The title of Jamogchian’s installation is from the hybrid language of Lidepla and the artist’s work explores the possibility of universal cognition. But in our era where multiple histories converge to only fall apart and the possibilities for contextual fixity can seem infinite\, any assumption of consensus over meaning will seem misguided. Moreover\, the certainties of ‘beauty’ or aesthetics and/or sensorial experience have long since been critiqued. \nIrrespective of participants background we are interested in sets of beliefs\, policies and understandings of what constitutes the validation in defining the existence of bad art. We are interested in speakers from a wide range of backgrounds that may have different understandings of this idea and different personal experiences to affect their opinion. Divergent positions\, situational examples and personal examples of how and where such art has made an impact for better or worse. \nSpeakers are asked to present for 10 minutes. This can be in any format such as a lecture style format\, performance\, display of objects\, an activity really any thing goes. After all speakers have said their piece the dialogue is ‘Up Against Interpretation’ and open to the audience for further interrogation. \nWe expect another fascinating event on its own merits – with students and members of the wider community from all over Bangkok coming together for an afternoon of stimulating dialogues. We have chosen to host the event at H Gallery in the spirit that the talks themselves are intended: to challenge authorities on ‘Knowledge’\, to show that institutions (like Art Galleries) offer one set of understandings for these global contexts\, but so do individuals\, such as yourselves\, or people who have personally experienced them\, or artists in their creative exploration of the ideas. As in the previous D-Dialogue the distinction between Personal vs Shared knowledge and opinions will undoubtedly be a core element to discussion. This is certainly part of what will be informing the differences of opinion on the afternoon. \nFurther information please contact: \nvalerieb@isb.ac.th \nnevdonj@isb.ac.th \ncurtin.brian@gmail.com
