DESCRIPTION:The mixed-media exhibition YES by Parinot Kunakornwong at CARTEL Artspace—the very title a concise expression of agreement as much as a voicing of enforced obedience—challenges not only the notions of memory and transformation\, but also of the “insignificant” and “worthless” by repositioning the common function and perception of dust as witness and memory in a historical framework. With the gravitas of an alchemist\, Kunakornwong transforms\, distilling through the artistic narrative of this new body of work\, the dust of our own bodies and of the gallery space that surrounds us into crystallized images that evoke a sense of suspended stillness. \nDuring this time of significant social and political challenges amid which Thailand is struggling to find stability between its perilous past and its constrained present\, YES attempts to evaluate and juxtapose\, formally and conceptually\, the dust of our memories with\, crucially\, the memories of a whole country. \nAbout the Artist \n“ My work is derived from the visual language of everyday Thai culture\, steeped in ritual\, superstition and myth engaging in Bangkok sense of disappointment and imperfect beauty. These ideas can be traced further to propaganda in Thai mass media\, which is imbued in Thai cultural background. In Bangkok there is no hierarchy\, everything is all over the place but it seems to have its own charm. At the same time it portrays a sense of failure\, failure of the modern world. \nIn the process of juxtaposition\, disposition\, reconfiguration\, and alchemy the tension between absurdity and spirituality\, the works becomes dissolved and ambiguous.”
