Building networks is an important part of working in the arts, whether locally, regionally, or internationally. Apart from networking as individuals, art practitioners can also build networks by building collectives, communities, or platforms for artistic exchanges. In this session of “The Art of Surviving in the Arts,” we welcome Pornpilai Meemalai from Baan Noorg Collaborative Art and Culture, Ratchaburi, Thailand and Lo Shih Tung from Open Contemporary Art Center, Taipei, Taiwan. They will be sharing not only their experiences in building networks, community, and art platforms, but also their insights into collaborative practices. Furthermore, they will discuss the benefits of registering their organisation as a legal entity, both in terms of securing local and international institutional support as well as in terms of the responsibilities they need to fulfill.

About Speakers

Open Contemporary Art Center (OCAC), Taiwan
Open Contemporary Art Center (OCAC) is an artist collective founded in Banqiao, Taipei in 2001. During its beginning years, OCAC launched programs such as artist studios, book clubs, presentations, exhibitions, and lectures to allow members and art lovers to understand and appreciate the different histories, forms, and systems of modern and contemporary art. OCAC has changed several locations since its birth: City District, Taipei (2010), Bangkok, Thailand (2012), Shilin, Taipei (2013), and Datong District, Taipei (2016). The collective has established connections with Thai artists in the recent years, and initiated the ThaiTai Project, bridging art practitioners in Taiwan and Thailand. OCAC continues to develop relationships with artists and art spaces in various parts of the world. With its nine current members as practicing artists, OCAC is a think-tank and platform for discussion, production, and inspiration. The members are active in the contemporary art scene as individual practitioners, but also come together as an alliance to push for diverse dialogues and artistic possibilities.

CHEN Szu-Han
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1981, Chen obtained a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Central St. Martin College of Art and Design, London. Chen concerns most about the contrasting perspectives from different cultures and social classes in contemporary life. Chen explores artistic creation as a pathway of sharing values as well as building relationships through collaboration. Her creative process often involves with audience participation in a constructed scenario in the context of daily life. Art practice includes media such as video, drawings, installation and photography. Chen’s video is part of 2016 Art Basel screening program. Artist residency at ISCP New York, UNITEC Auckland, TAV Taiwan, KHOJ Workshop India. Chen currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan.

LO Shih Tung
LO Shih Tung’s practices often focus on the patterns of daily life, especially forthe traces, remains and stories that come from the over-produced social activitiesin our present time. Throughout these fragments which is seen as the statement ofWalter Benjamin, it reflects and responses the integrated construction and world. Apiece of alive archive, brings out the specific messages of questions and think as wellas move and transform, is seeking for the lingering ghosts – the identity, home,hometown and city in the present society.LO is member and current director of artists collective OCAC (Open Contemporary Art Center). he is currently active at the projects, such as ThaiTai – A Measure ofUnderstanding, THAITAI FEVER in 2012-2013 and CO- Temporary : Southeast Asia –
Taiwan Forum and Exchange Program on Arts and Culture in 2016. In recent years LO has personally been participating in regional art programs around South East Asiacounties, such as 2014 Beyond Pressure Public Art Festival in Myanmar, 2014 Project Glocal Penang and 2015 DA+C Festival in Malaysia and 2016-2017 365 Days : LifeMuse in Thailand. In 2014 LO gained the grant of Overseas Arts Travel from TheNational Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF) and preceded his research with art
spaces, organizations and artists collective in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.

Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture
Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture is a non-profit artist initiative, a fundament strategy for community development and an artistic practice service-providing program located in Nongpho district, Ratchaburi, found by jiandyin since 2011. Baan Noorg runs alternative interdisciplinary art program for developing contemporary art and cultural production for local and global community. It functions as an alternative learning platform for analyzing, discussing and debating theoretically and practically toward social condition and community as case study for exploring, researching and developing community engagement, social practice, cultural and contemporary art practice among artists, researchers, curators, educators from various fields. The expected outcome is to find out the possibilities of living together and achieving better community. Baan Noorg’s programs and activities are partly funded by government/non-government institutions.

Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture

Jiandyin (Pornpilai and Jiradej Meemalai)
Jiandyin are interdisciplinary group artists. Their works focus on creating situation to construct relationships between human and human in relation to his/her social context. Their recent solo-exhibitions include “Portrait [Archives of Dialogue: Seeing and Being]” at Gallery Seescape, Chiang Mai, Thailand and “The Ontology of Gold : Magic Mountains” at Cartel Artspace, Bangkok, Thailand and international group exhibitions: “Changwon Asian Art Festival”, South Korea, 2017, “Rivers – The way of life in Transition”, Asia Contemporary Art Link, Pier2 Art Center, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, 2016, “Beyond Pressure Public Art Festival”, Yangon, Myanmar, 2014. They were artists in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco and ISCP, New York, 2010, Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei, 2012, CivitellaRanieri Center, Umbria and Lichtenberg Studios, Berlin, 2013, were awarded a fellowship grant from the Asian Cultural Council in 2009 and organization grant in 2012. Their curatorial projects include Topography of Mirror Cities – Bangkok at Bangkok Art and Culture Center, 2018, funded by Foundation of Culture and Arts, Taiwan, 365 days : LIFE MUSE project, 2015-2016, funded by the Japan Foundation Bangkok, co-curated THAITAI : A Measure of Understanding project, Bangkok-Taipei, 2012-2014 and OCAC Bangkok project 2012. In 2011, they found Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture, a non-profit artist-run initiative in Ratchaburi that runs community based art projects, organizes artistic and social enterprise projects for Nongpo community children in Ratchaburi Thailand.

การเดินทางของศิลปินที่มาพบกันจนถึงรวมตัวกันเพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงานและนำเสนอในรูปแบบของกลุ่มศิลปินหรือกลุ่มศิลปะ เส้นทางที่ล้วนมีความเฉพาะตัวรวมถึงรูปแบบการทำงานที่ไม่สามารถปฎิเสธการต่อรอง การเผชิญหน้าทางความคิด ไปจนถึงการผลิต การจัดการ และกระบวนการที่เกี่ยวข้องล้วนต้องผ่านการต่อรองทั้งสิ้น
กิจกรรมนี้ เราจะร่วมพูดคุยไปกับกลุ่มศิลปินถึงจุดเริ่มต้นของการรวมตัวทำงานเป็นกลุ่ม กระบวนการจัดการทั้งภายในและภายนอกองค์กร รวมไปถึงพูดคุยเกี่ยวกับประเด็นต่างๆ อาทิ เหตุใดกลุ่มศิลปินต้องทำการจดทะเบียนตามกฎหมาย และเมื่อจดแล้วจะมีสิทธิประโยชน์หรืออำนาจต่อรองกับหน่วยงานรัฐและเอกชนอย่างไร วิเคราะห์ถึงสิทธิประโยชน์ในการจดทะเบียนของกลุ่มศิลปินหรือกลุ่มศิลปะในไทยและต่างประเทศ

Open Contemporary Art Center (OCAC)
Open Contemporary Art Center (OCAC) คือการร่วมกลุ่มของศิลปิน ก่อตั้งขึ้นที่เขตป่านเฉียว เมืองไทเป ประเทศไต้หวัน เมื่อปี 2544 ในช่วงเริ่มต้น OCAC ได้ดำเนินกิจกรรมต่างๆมากมาย อาทิ สตูดิโอศิลปิน, ชมรมวรรณกรรม นิทรรศการ เสวนา และการบรรยายต่างๆ เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้สมาชิกและผู้ที่สนใจศิลปะ เกิดความเข้าใจและเห็นคุณค่า ของประวัติศาสตร์ที่แตกต่าง รูปแบบ และระบบของทั้งศิลปะสมัยใหม่และศิลปะร่วมสมัย โดย OCAC ได้เปลี่ยนพื้นที่หลายครั้งตั้งแต่ก่อตั้ง ได้แก่ ที่ในเขตเมือง ไทเป (2553) ที่กรุงเทพฯ ประเทศไทย (2555)
ที่เขตซื่อหลิน ไทเป (2556) และที่เขตต้าถ่ง ไทเป (2559) เมื่อไม่นานนี้ ทางกลุ่มได้สร้างเครือข่ายร่วมกับศิลปินไทย โดยเริ่มด้วยโครงการไทยไท (ThaiTai Project) ซึ่งเป็นการเชื่อมโยงการทำงานของกลุ่มคนทำงานศิลปะทั้งในไทยและไต้หวัน นอกจากนี้ OCAC ยังคงพัฒนาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิลปินและพื้นที่ทางศิลปะในหลายภาคส่วนทั่วโลก และด้วยการทำงานของสมาชิกปัจจุบันทั้งเก้าคน ซึ่งเป็นศิลปินที่ยังคงทำงานสร้างสรรค์อยู่ ทำให้ OCAC เป็นกลุ่มก้อนทางความคิดและพื้นที่ของกิจกรรมต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น การแลกเปลี่ยนความคิด การสร้างสรรค์ และแรงบันดาลใจ สมาชิกหลายคนยังคงทำงานอย่างต่อเนื่องในวงการศิลปะร่วมสมัย ทั้งในบทบาทของศิลปินอิสระ และทำงานร่วมกันเป็นสมาพันธ์ด้วย เพื่อผลักดันการปฏิสัมพันธ์ที่หลากหลาย รวมถึงความเป็นไปได้ทางด้านศิลปะอื่นๆ

CHEN Szu-Han
เฉินซื่อหาน เกิดที่ไทเป ประเทศไต้หวัน เมื่อปี 2524 เธอจบการศึกษาศิลปกรรมศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต จาก Central St. Martin College of Art and Design เมืองลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ เธอสนใจในทัศนคติขั้วตรงข้ามซึ่งเป็นผลมาจากความแตกต่างด้านวัฒนธรรมและชนชั้นทางสังคมซึ่งพบเห็นในชีวิตปัจจุบัน เธอพยายามใช้การสร้างสรรค์ทางศิลปะเพื่อหามุมในการแบ่งปัน และสร้างความสัมพันธ์ผ่านการทำงานร่วมกัน กระบวนการสร้างสรรค์งานของเธอนั้น มักเกี่ยวเนื่องกับการมีปฏิสัมพันธ์ของผู้ชมที่มีต่อสถานการณ์ที่ถูกกำหนดในบริบทของชีวิตประจำวัน ผลงานของเธอมีหลากหลายรูปแบบทั้ง วิดีโอ ภาพวาด ศิลปะการจัดวาง และภาพถ่าย ทั้งนี้ ผลงานวิดีโอของเธอได้เข้าร่วมจัดแสดงที่เทศกาล Art Basel เมื่อปี 2560 นอกจากนี้ เธอยังเคยเป็นศิลปินในโครงการพำนักต่างๆ อาทิ ที่ ISCP New York ที่ UNITEC Auckland ที่ TAV Taiwan และที่ KHOJ Workshop India ปัจจุบันอาศัยและทำงานอยู่ที่เมืองไทเป ประเทศไต้หวัน

LO Shih Tung
ผลงานสร้างสรรค์ของหลัวซื่อตง ให้ความสนใจกับรูปแบบของชีวิตประจำวัน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งที่เกี่ยวกับ ร่องรอย เศษซาก และเรื่องเล่า ซึ่งเป็นผลจากกิจกรรมทางสังคมอันถูกผลิตล้นในปัจจุบัน ชิ้นส่วนเหล่านี้ มักถูกพูดถึงในสถานะถ้อยแถลงของวอลเตอร์ เบนยามิน ที่ส่งแรงสะท้อนและโต้ตอบกับโครงสร้างเบ็ดเสร็จและโลกแห่งการควบรวม ชิ้นส่วนของเอกสารที่มีชีวิต ได้นำพาสารจำเพาะแห่งความสงสัยและความนึกคิด ตลอดจนการเคลื่อนไหวและแปรเปลี่ยน ทว่ายังคงสภาพเป็นดั่งวิญญาณที่ยังวนเวียน เฝ้าเสาะหาอัตลักษณ์ ที่อยู่อาศัย ภูมิลำเนา และเมืองในสังคมปัจจุบัน เขาเป็นทั้งสมาชิกและผู้อำนวยการคนปัจจุบันของกลุ่มศิลปิน OCAC (Open Contemporary Art Center) และกำลังดำเนินงานหลายโครงการ อาทิ โครงการ ThaiTai – A Measure of Understanding (ระยะไทยไท) โครงการ THAITAI FEVER ปี 2555-2556 โครงการ CO- Temporary : Southeast Asia – Taiwan Forum และโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนเชิงศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมปี 2559 ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีมานี้ เขาได้เข้าร่วมโครงการศิลปะระดับภูมิภาคทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ อาทิ Beyond Pressure Public Art Festival ประเทศพม่า เมื่อปี 2557 Project Glocal Penang ประเทศมาเลเซีย เมื่อปี 2557 DA+C Festival ประเทศมาเลเซีย เมื่อปี 2558 และโครงการ 365 Days : Life Muse ประเทศไทย เมื่อปี 2559-2560 นอกจากนี้ เขายังได้รับสนับสนุนเงินทุนโครงการ Overseas Arts Travel จากThe National Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF) เมื่อปี 2557 โดยก่อนหน้านั้นเขาเดินทางไปทำวิจัยเกี่ยวกับองค์กรและพื้นที่ศิลปะ รวมถึงการรวมกลุ่มศิลปินในอินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ และไทย

บ้านนอก ความร่วมมือด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรม (Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture)
บ้านนอก (Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture) องค์กรความร่วมมือทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยที่ไม่มุ่งหวังผลกำไร ริเริ่มและก่อตั้งในปี 2554 โดย Jiandyin (จิระเดช และพรพิไล มีมาลัย) ที่ชุมชนหนองโพ อำเภอโพธาราม จังหวัดราชบุรี มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อผลักดันให้เกิดการขับเคลื่อนศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย โดยสร้างความร่วมมือระหว่างศิลปินกับชุมชน สนับสนุนศิลปะเป็นเครื่องมือภายใต้ยุทธศาสตร์การพัฒนาท้องถิ่น จัดโครงการศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยในลักษณะสหวิทยาการศิลป ศึกษาวิจัย-พัฒนาและสร้างผลผลิตเชิงศิลปวัฒนธรรมเพื่อชุมชนท้องถิ่น/ประชาคมโลก ผ่านศิลปะทัศน์การมีส่วนร่วมและความร่วมมือภายใต้แนวคิดศิลปะนอกห้องปฏิบัติการ (Post studio) ผสานความร่วมมือระหว่างชุมชน ศิลปิน นักออกแบบ นักวิชาการ นักศึกษา ภัณฑารักษ์ และอื่นฯ เป็นพื้นที่การศึกษาทางเลือก ทดลอง แลกเปลี่ยนความรู้และพัฒนาต้นแบบการขับเคลื่อนศิลปวัฒนธรรม โดยมีเป้าหมายเพื่อการอยู่ร่วมกันของมนุษย์ โดยรับทุนสนับสนุนทั้งจากหน่วยงานรัฐและเอกชน

Jiandyin (จิแอนด์ยิ่น) เป็นศิลปินคู่สร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะสหวิทยาการและศิลปะความร่วมมือผลงานของทั้งสองมุ่งเน้นไปที่การสร้างพื้นที่หรือรูปที่ก่อให้เกิดความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับมนุษย์ที่เชื่อมโยงไปสู่บริบททางสังคมชีวิตความเป็นอยู่มิตรภาพ ฯลฯ การแสดงนิทรรศการเดี่ยวในปีที่ผ่านมาได้แก่นิทรรศการ “Portrait [Archives of Dialogue: Seeing and Being]” ที่Gallery Seescape จ.เชียงใหม่และนิทรรศการ “The Ontology of Gold : Magic Mountains” ที่ Cartel Artspace กรุงเทพฯ และมีผลงานนิทรรศการกลุ่มในระดับนานาชาติ อาทิ นิทรรศการ“Changwon Asian Art Festival” เมืองชางวอน สาธารณรัฐเกาหลีใต้เมื่อ ปี2560 นิทรรศการ “Rivers – The way of life in Transition” ที่ Asia Contemporary Art Link, Pier2 Art Center เมืองเกาสง สาธารณรัฐไต้หวันเมื่อปี2559 นิทรรศการ “Beyond Pressure Public Art Festival” เมืองย่างกุ้ง ประเทศเมียนมาร์เมื่อปี 2557 นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นศิลปินพำนักและปฏิบัติงาน (Residency) ในหลายประเทศ อาทิ Headlands Center for the Arts, International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) เมืองนิวยอร์คและ Headlands Center for the Arts เมืองซานฟรานซิสโก ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเมื่อปี 2553 Treasure Hill Artist Village เมืองไทเป สาธารณรัฐไต้หวันเมื่อปี 2555 CivitellaRanieri Center อุมเบรีย อิตาลีและLichtenberg Studios เบอร์ลินเยอรมนีเมื่อปี 2556 นอกจากนี้ Jiandyin ยังได้รับทุนพัฒนาผลงานFellowship Grant Award จากAsian Cultural Council ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเมือปี 2553และทุนสำหรับหน่วยงานในปี 2555 รวมทั้งมีผลงานในบทบาทของภัณฑารักษ์ อาทิ โครงการ “Topography of Mirror Cities – Bangkok” ที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร สนับสนุนโดยมูลนิธิศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมแห่งชาติสาธารณรัฐไต้หวัน ปี 2561 โครงการ “365 days : LIFE MUSE” ปี 2558-2559 โดยความร่วมมือและสนับสนุนโดยหอศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรและมูลนิธิญี่ปุ่นกรุงเทพฯ และเป็นภัณฑารักษ์ร่วมกับ Open Contemporary Art Center เมืองไทเป สาธารณรัฐไต้หวันจัดการโครงการศิลปินพำนักเสวนาและนิทรรศการศิลปะร่วมสมัย OCAC Bangkok โครงการนิทรรศกา ร“ระยะ : ไทยไท”และการสัมมนาศิลปะร่วมสมัยระหว่างศิลปินไทยและไต้หวันไทเป – กรุงเทพเมื่อปี 2555-2556 Jiandyin ร่วมก่อตั้ง Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture หน่วยงานไม่แสวงผลกำไรริเริ่มและขับเคลื่อนโครงการศิลปะชุมชนโดยกลุ่มศิลปินที่ตำบลหนองโพ จังหวัดราชบุรีและดำเนินงานโครงการจัดฝึกอบรมศิลปะไม่จำกัดรูปแบบการผลิตสื่อภาพยนตร์สั้นแอนิเมชันและการจัดเทศกาลหนังสั้นแก่เยาวชนชุมชนหนองโพและเยาวชนทั่วไปภายใต้ชื่อหนองโพ KiD ดี (Baan Noorg – NPKD)
