DESCRIPTION:(For Thai please scroll down) \nPACHIMON – A parallel universe – A solo exhibition by Claude Estèbe\nAt Alliance Française Bangkok Presented by Toot Yung Gallery\nCurator: Myrtille Tibayrenc \n12 Sept – 10 Oct 2015\nOpening reception Sat 12 Sept / 7pm / Alliance Française Bangkok \nThe Toot Yung Gallery in accordance with the Alliance Française Bangkok are proud to present the latest works of French photographer\, Claude Estèbe within the framework of the Photo Bangkok Festival. \nFor several years now\, Claude Estèbe\, a specialist in Japanese visual culture\, has undertaken personal photographic research using cheap plastic toys as his models and exploring the frontier between the original and its copies. He has gathered a huge collection of “Pachimons\,” a colloquial Japanese term for cheap and naive copies of toys derived from monster movies and TV series\, such as Godzilla or Gundam robots. The abundance of these cheap replicas collected all over South East Asia reveals the great impact of the Japanese subculture that has reached even the most remote areas of Asia. \nThese figures are not only cloned\, they also give birth to new characters and new aesthetics. For instance\, a new and local series derived from Ultraman or Kamen Rider was created in Thailand that introduces new heroes and toys that are\, at times\, far remote from the originals. As a kind of tribute vice pays to virtue\, the copies often encapsulate the spirit of an era even more vividly than the real thing. Cut from their original purpose of incarnating heroes from the TV screen\, these debased replicas become the essence of their originals.\nBy enhancing the defects and imperfections\, playing with special lighting techniques and close up compositions\, Claude Estèbe extracts the humanity of these mass-produced toys.
